Investment Readiness Program - The Next Steps for ROSE and New Moon

Throughout 2023 we have been working on the next stage of Sunnivue Farm with the incoming operators of New Moon Community Homestead. Read below for more info…

We are so excited to be part of the Investment Readiness Program. We are working to contribute to  a resilient local food system through farming and community agriculture. ROSE Land Care Association holds title to the land and buildings protecting it for future generations and biodynamic agriculture. New Moon Community Homestead is operating to fulfill the ROSE mission on the farm as a social enterprise. The Investment readiness fund is helping us to explore the needs of the farm for the future and to create a plan to succeed. We have identified three areas of focus for investment readiness: 1.  scaling up the agricultural operations on the farm; 2. increasing on farm accommodations; and 3. doing more on-farm  food processing i.e. pickling, baking, meat packaging.

2019 New Roof for the Farmhouse

After 22 years, the Sunnivue farmhouse has a new roof. With record amounts of snowfall over the winter of 2017 to 2018, Alex and Ellinor Nurnberg had been using pots and pans to catch leaks coming through the roof. The new roof is made of metal, and work was completed just a few weeks ago.

Alex and Ellinor remember a raging hailstorm when they first moved into the farmhouse, with hailstones breaking through kitchen windows. As Alex describes it: "I went to the barn and the cows were going crazy: it was like artillery." Ellinor says the vehicles at the farm looked like egg cartons: with huge dents from all the hail strikes. The farmhouse roof was replaced after that storm with money from the insurance company, and this time, the funds were generated thorough ROSE and the farm's partnership with organic farmers Jason O'Neil and Twan Peters. "It hung in there well," says Alex, happy to be welcoming the new roof after all the years at the farm.

Photos of the new roof are forthcoming, but here are a few of the old roof from last summer, with the tarp to stop the leaks.

2018 Barn Roof Repair Fundraiser

Raise the Roof for Sunnivue

For over 27 years, Sunnivue Farm and ROSE Land Trust has been bringing rural and urban communities together. Our organic and biodynamic-minded setting has supported individuals and groups from a variety of backgrounds. Our visitors have had the opportunity to appreciate the gifts given by the land, while spending time at the farm.

After a heavy snowfall in January 2018, our beloved barn was severely damaged, as the lean-to roof collapsed. This has left us with the cost and challenge of a $28,000 repair bill. We are looking to the community to help us repair the barn so that Sunnivue can continue to be enjoyed and loved by all.

Our goal is to have the barn completed by Spring 2019. We are looking forward to celebrating the completion with a grand unveiling by having an open house with our supporters and community members.

Thank you so much for your support, and please send us any questions you may have about this fundraiser.

2018 Student Internship

Summer Help on Sunnivue Farm

As part of a long tradition at Sunnivue Farm, students from a Waldorf High School in Germany worked on the farm for six weeks this summer, from July to September.

Moritz and Mathis on the porch.jpg

Mortiz Dammann, 15 (left), and Mathis Meyer, 16, worked in the Market Garden picking vegetables and weeding. They also cut wood, looked after the chickens and turkeys, and helped bring vegetables to the Masonville Farmers Market.

On their last night at the farm, asked about the favourite parts of their stay, Mathis said that he liked learning English while working with Chris White, but added: "everything we did was fun."

When asked about their least favourite jobs, they mentioned pulling weeds and digging for potatoes in the hot sun. Moritz says he'll have a new appreciation for how hard it is to harvest potatoes when he sees them in the supermarket at home.

They described their motivation for coming to Canada as a chance to practice their English and learn about another country. What they knew about Canada before their internship was, according to Mathis: "you speak English, and the land is very big for the farmers."

Did they eat anything new while at Sunnivue Farm? Mathis replied: "yes, I tried a fennel salad."
"And did you like it?"
"No."

"And what will you remember about Sunnivue?"
"Everything was a memory for my life," said Mathis.

Alex and Ellinor Nurnberg reported that the boys were very responsible, and even did some of the cooking: mostly spaghetti and hamburgers. They'll have a few new skills when they go home, in addition to potato harvesting: Ellinor taught them how to make cheese and yogurt.

If you'd like to visit Sunnivue this weekend, the Farm Store is open from 10 am to 4 pm on Sept 29. There's still lots of produce, including squash, potatoes, parsnips, onions, artichokes, tomatoes, carrots, kale, celeriac and celery, green and red peppers, eggplant, beets, and cabbage. Please call ahead for large orders or anything you'd like to set aside before your arrival, at 226 234 8247. There are also eggs for sale as well as maple syrup, organic teas, and Weleda personal care and medicinal products.

Please call ahead to order turkey, duck or chicken: 226 234 8247, or to ask what's available at the store.

2018 Harvest Celebration in Pictures

More than 40 people attended the Harvest Festival at Sunnivue on September 15.
